A total of $46,058.00 in grant funds was recently awarded to Historic District for the City of Van Buren.
A one-time heritage grant, with 33 successful applicants out of 202, in the amount of $11,558.00 was awarded to complete replacement/repairs to the exterior doors of the King Opera House on Main Street. The restoration work is being done by Craig Cabinets of Van Buren.
Another grant in the amount of $21,000.00 was awarded to Historic District with $20,000.00 to be used to facilitate the development of a city-wide strategic plan for the identification and protection of historic sites, properties and districts. The remaining $1,000.00 is designated to contract a qualified consultant to facilitate the development of design review guidelines for the Fairview Cemetery Historic District.
Yet another grant in the amount of $13,500.00 was awarded from Certified Local Government funds for training for commissioners and staff, which includes quarterly CLG meetings, and NAPC Forum.
The opportunity to apply for these grants is made possible by Dept. of Arkansas Heritage through the Certified Local Government Program. Application for each of these grants was prepared by Cami L. Brown.
The Historic District Commission would like to thank Senator Ruth Whitaker and Representative Rick Green, along with Van Buren Chamber of Commerce and Van Buren A & P Commission for their continuing support in these efforts to obtain grant funding for the City of Van Buren and the preservation of its rich heritage.
