News !!

The first public hearing for input on a new city-wide preservation plan was held November 6, 2008. Phil Thomason of Thomason & Associates out of Nashville, Tennessee has been hired to put together a city-wide preservation plan for the city. Mr. Thomason will hold at least two more public hearings to take input and answer any questions anyone may have about this city-wide preservation plan. The dates for these meetings will be published in the local paper once a date and time are set. This activity has been financed entirely with Federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of Interior, administered through the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas. However, the contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the Department of the Interior, nor does the mention of trade names or commercial products constitute endorsement or recommendation by the Department of the Interior or the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

Mr. Randy Smith, liaison for Fairview Cemetery and the City of Van Buren has been recognized by the Preservation Alliance of Arkansas by being awarded the advocacy award for preservation. Mr. Smith has been given this award for his continuing efforts on behalf of preservation of Fairview Cemetery in the City of Van Buren. This award presentation will take place at the Governor’s mansion in Little Rock, Arkansas at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, January 9th, 2009 at the Preservation Alliance of Arkansas awards banquet. Keynote speaker for this event will be Senator David Pryor. Congratulations, Randy Smith!

A group of volunteers, the Historic Greeters, have taken to the streets in the City of Van Buren to greet tourists, and their welcome includes greeting visitors in costume. This group meets once a week, and is presently working on facts about Historic Main Street to share with tourists. We hope to have more about this group after the first of next year.

Van Buren was designated as a Preserve America Community recently. To learn more about Preserve America, visit www.PreserveAmerica.gov.
