I would like the opportunity to work with the Van Buren skateboarding community and gather the money ourselves to build a permanent real skate park in Van Buren. The members of our community have no where to do what they love or to express themselves in a progressive manner. We could start a Charity too get the property and build the place we would just like the opportunity to do so. Please email me at joehfp98@gmail.com to help me understand what I need to do through parks and rec and how I can get this started us skaters can handle the rest! Fort Smith has 3 parks all we have is storefronts and sidewalks with no skateboarding signs keep the youth off of streets with traffic and give us a place to skate! What if one of these kids has the opportunity to become the next pro?

The City of Van Buren owns some land between the Access road (by Coltons) and Bear Track Drive. It is currently just being used as a place to store gravel. This would be a perfect place to build a park, and would be a great asset for the city. There is a large number of kids/teens in the surrounding neighborhood, and a park would give them an opportunity to get some exercise and make some friends (and turn off the tablets, Playstation, and Xbox). The park would need to have activities for young children, as well as teens and adults. Some examples; a playground, swing set, tether-ball, basketball court, tennis court, skateboard/BMX bike course, climbing center, a pavilion with a couple of picnic tables, etc.

Many of us living in Crawford County are alarmed that Van Buren, animal control, euthanizes animals after 5 days if owner not located. Is there not a way to allow these animals to be adopted by members in our community? I realize there may be a need for some animals to be euthanized but not allowing the animals to be adopted seems unusually cruel and harsh to me and other people living in Crawford County. I would truly appreciate any input your office has on the subject.

Van Buren is is the only town in the area without a running golf course. Citizens and the High School golf team are having to drive 20-30 minutes to smaller towns to play golf, thus pouring money into other towns and their restaurants. Cedars is a 9 hole course on 68 acres that would be a perfect addition to the wonderful park and city lake area. The course is currently owned by the city but being poorly managed by a private family. I recommend that the City of Van Buren take control of the golf course and use COVID relief funds and other supplements to renovate the course and the equipment needed to mow/maintain the layout. There is no reason why Alma, Mountainburg, Poteau, Dyer, Charleston, Ozark, Clarksville, Fort Smith, and Danville can have golf courses while Van Buren citizens are left having to drive to play golf. The location of Cedars would allow weekday and weekend use for VB residents and the golf team.

I think a multi-use trail would be a great opportunity to drive business to people who've already invested in our town of Van Buren. A multi-use path would drive foot traffic, bike traffic, increase tourism from the local area, and provide an opportunity for our community to improve it's health.
Looking at a map, I think it could be accomplished on side roads and back roads between each of those locations where it would be minimal impact on existing zones/construction.
I grew up in a small town in Indiana, but I would go to the city to bike/run/rollerblade on this trail:
https://www.bikethemonon.com/
The Monon Trail has been a huge boon for the local community with businesses boosted that were near or connected to the trial and new businesses have popped up over the years.
This would have to be phased and scaled, but has a ton of potential--maybe work with Ft Smith and connect to the Rice-Cardin trail by the river. I appreciate any consideration given to this idea.

I would love to see our parks and green spaces vastly improved on. I would like to see gardens, gardening clubs implemented for individuals to help maintain those features, I would like to see expanded walking / biking paths, I would like to see Lee Creek Park actually turned into what our penny tax was supposed to create. There are no facilities, there are next to no trash cans, there are no walking paths, etc. I would like to see our city park thriving, the road repaved, more places to sit and relax and enjoy the space. The Golf Course looks a hot mess. It's an embarrassment. And of course we need a community center with a pool and indoor facilities for our youth, a viable place to get exercise within our own community. I learned to swim in our city pool as a child, my kids don't have access to a pool. I would love for them to have the same opportunty as I had.

As we continue to be a great community for families to raise kids, I suggest, for new developments we required sidewalks installed in all neighborhoods and a requirement for a community playground area based on number of residents within walking distance...e.g. if the development is very large, it might need more than one. This will build community, keep our kids safer, and increase fitness levels and the health of those in Van Buren.

As we expect to see growth in the River Valley over the next few years, based solely on the expansion at Ebbing ANG base, I think we need to update our building codes to give our city its unique "store front" in the River Valley. If our city council sets clear building codes, business will meet them. I see this all over the country--a CVS in Arizona doesn't have to look the same as one in Florida or as one in Arkansas. I suggest we work with the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce, look at other well-developed small towns around the country and develop our codes to build on our traditions and posture us for the future. I think we miss a great development opportunity if we just throw up a bunch of metal buildings to meet immediate needs without any strategic planning

Leave that to the police like it used to be
